For Shaina Shirar, director of the Student Union Board at Indiana University at Kokomo, creating new campus traditions has been a priority of hers and the campus activities team. This year the board had its second annual outdoor movie night, promoting it through social media sites, flyers, campus TV and with the participation of the Greek Life groups on campus. The event attracted over 150 participants, which was a big success for this commuter college. “It was my job to see that our event ran smoothly and all the jobs were done properly and successfully. Attendance is always an issue with any of our events. We’re a commuter campus so it’s really hard to get people to attend nighttime events,” Shaina said. A big learning from doing the event was to find ways to get more collaboration with other groups on campus, and above all, “When something goes wrong I have to roll with it instead of having a panic attack.”
Thanks Shaina, your Maui Wowi t-shirt is on the way!
